New to Fairview

 If your student will be absent please contact the school and let them know. You can fill out an absence form online at www.fairviewhs.org/absence-report OR call your student's absence in to FHS at 720.561.5352. If you know your student will be absent you can have them complete a Pre arranged Absence Form and have teachers sign off on the form prior to the absence.

If your student is absent due to a doctor's visit or other medical reason, don't forget to bring in a doctor's note excusing your student's absence. The student can drop this off at the front office.

Are you a new student and a freshman? Here's some essential information for you.

Freshman don't need to bring a lunch or school supplies to the first day of school! We will be providing them with a pizza lunch.

What should my freshman bring on the first day of school? Water bottle

What will they be doing on the first day of school? They will be getting oriented to FHS! They will be led by their amazing 360 Leaders the whole day. They will receive their schedules today. There will be a pizza lunch provided so all they need is their water bottle for day 1. Your freshman will also get their ID.

Drop Off/Pick Up If you are dropping your Freshman off at FHS you need to drive through the 'senior lot' and stop in the drop off location indicated there. You can find the 'senior lot' on the west side of the front of the school.

You will NOT be able to drop off or pick up in the pull in area [called the horseshoe at FHS] in front of the school.

The FHS IDs are important. They give your freshman [and everyone else enrolled at FHS] access to the building during the day. So remind your freshman to keep that on them at all times.

1- How much do freshman grades matter for college admissions?

Don’t make this a subject of great worry and added stress. Yes, it is always important for students to do as well as possible in their classes during high school but colleges understand that freshman year can be a time of adjustment for many students. If the freshman year has been challenging, admissions officers will be looking for an upward trend in the student’s grades over the next three years.

If students need any extra support to be successful in their classes, there is a descriptive list on the Counseling Office website, with sources where they can find temporary or long-term help: Academic Support

Students are encouraged to:

1. Meet with teachers during free class periods and during Collaboration Access Time.

2. Receive help from tutors in the Student Achievement Center (SAC) in the library. Contact for the SAC: 720-561-3399

3. Request a tutor by logging onto the FHS Website Homepage and linking to the “Tutoring Marketplace.”

4. Take advantage of many self-help resources like Khan Academy.

5. Students who are in need of an extra measure of academic support should meet with counselors to consider additional options. Please check the Counseling Office website for more information or contact their student's counselor -- Academic Support

2- Standardized Testing- What standardized tests will my student need to take and when will he/she take them? 

Don’t worry, your freshman student did not need to take the PSAT!

There is plenty of time to take this practice SAT test during their sophomore and junior years. On the Counseling website there is a thorough page about all the tests, and when it is recommended for students to take them -- PSAT/SAT/ACT Testing

3- What do freshmen learn during the Course Selection/Learning Style/College Planning sessions with ICAP & Naviance?

Freshmen receive instruction from counselors and learn about their interests, personalities, learning styles, and more.

During the month of October, all freshmen students take a survey on Naviance to find out about their learning styles: visual, tactile, auditory, kinesthetic, or a combination. Ask your students about the results of this survey and which learning style best describes how they best take in and assimilate information.

In the next three months, freshmen will be taking interest surveys and also developing a plan to give them ideas and requirements for future course selections. Parents have access to Naviance on our website by obtaining a password from the Administrative Assistants in the Counseling Office.

Naviance is also a powerful tool for researching colleges when your student is ready. It's a great idea to get your login and ask your student if they know theirs.

♦Athletics

Did you know that in Infinite Campus (IC) you can not only see your child’s grades, schedule and much more! IC also has apps for iPhone and Android which is another really easy way to keep up on your student’s school performance. Sign into Infinite Campus at www.bvsd.org.

When you log in to your IC account, the ‘District Notices’ bulletin board is automatically opened up for you. If you click on the ‘School Notices’ tab just below, you will open the bulletin board specific to Fairview. This Board may display additional information pertaining to activities going on at the school.

IC Mobile App IC also has apps for iPhone and Android which is another really easy way to keep up on your student’s school performance. Search "Infinite Campus Mobile Portal" in the App Store. Download the app. The Mobile App is available for parents and students. Enter the name of the district "Boulder Valley" and select "Colorado" when ready to use the app for the first time.

Fairview High School is an open campus. This means your student can come and go as they please during school hours. If they have a doctor's appointment or they need to leave school for a different reason, you Do Not need to call in or sign them out. It is helpful if they are going to leave class in the middle that they let their teacher know ahead of time so it causes as little disruption as possible.

There are two main school dances: Homecoming and Prom. Many freshman go to homecoming. Most go in groups of friends, but some may have a date. There is no need to get really dressed up for homecoming, though students usually wear something special. The dance is a fun and safe environment with different themes each year.

You can drop off something to your student. Just go into the front office, drop off the item on the table just to the left of the front door, and ask the front desk to sign in your item. Don't leave anything at school without signing it in at the front desk.
