Our health room is staffed with a full-time nurse and health room para to attend to students' health needs. We have carefully outlined crucial steps, covering medication guidelines and emergency procedures, to ensure a safe and supportive environment for everyone. Guidelines for Student Health Care and Emergencies

Health Room Staff: Fairview High School has a dedicated full-time nurse and health room para to assist with students' health needs.

Use of Clinic: The clinic is intended for students with serious or unexpected illnesses or injuries.

Checking Out: If a student becomes ill and needs to leave school, they must check out with the school nurse or the attendance office first.

Medication Dispensation: School personnel cannot dispense medication without completion of the required BVSD form.

Carrying Medications: To carry medications during school hours while on school property, students must obtain a form from the school nurse and return it with the required signatures.

Emergency Contact Information: In case of a medical emergency, the school will follow parental instructions provided during the Annual Data Update (ADU). Keeping contact information updated annually is crucial.

Paramedic Decision-Making: If parents/guardians or emergency contacts cannot be reached during an emergency, paramedics will make decisions regarding treatments, hospitals, etc.

When Feeling Ill

**Report to Health Room:** If a student experiences illness or injury during the school day, they should promptly report to the Health Room office for treatment.

**Recording Information:** The Health Room staff will record the student's name, time of the visit, and the outcome of the visit. This information will be used to verify or document any necessary absence from class.

**Contacting Parent/Guardian:** Students have the option to contact a parent or guardian from the Health Room office, if needed, to arrange for pickup and transportation home.

**Emergency Response Team:** In the event of emergencies, an Emergency Response Team is available to provide assistance and support.

**Health Room Contact:** The Health Room can be reached at: 720-561-3336 for any health-related concerns or queries.

**Updating Emergency Contact Information:** Parents are responsible for ensuring that emergency contact information is kept up to date to facilitate efficient communication during emergencies.

Medications in School

● NO medication, prescription or non-prescription, may be carried by the student to take on his/her own, i.e., in backpack or pocket, unless special arrangements have been made with the school nurse consultant, family and medical provider.

● For all prescription medication, a student’s parent or guardian must make a written request for school personnel to administer the medication by providing a completed Medication Authorization Form, which is signed by both parent and physician. The student must report to the health room or school office to take medications.

● Exception: Any student who requires the use of an emergency medication, such as an EpiPen, inhaler, or insulin, may carry and self-administer the prescribed medication with approval of their medical provider and school nurse consultant.

● Any medication administered at school must be supplied by a parent, in the original pharmacy or over-the-counter bottle.

● Parents must pick up unused medication at the end of the school year or it will be disposed of by school staff.

Immunizations

Students not up to date on immunizations will have 14 school days from notification to complete the requirements. Please visit the BVSD Health Services Website. If you have questions, call the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment at 303-692–2000. For more information, please visit the BVSD Policy JHCB.

Colorado law (Board of Health rule 6 CCR 1009-2) requires all students attending Colorado schools and licensed child cares to be vaccinated against certain diseases unless an exemption is filed.

Under Colorado law, a student may be exempted from immunizations if they have submitted a signed medical, religious or personal exemption.

Students Required to Submit Documentation of Immunization or Exemption

This school year BVSD will be enforcing Colorado law requiring all students attending Colorado schools and licensed child cares to be vaccinated against certain diseases unless a signed medical, religious or personal exemption is filed with the school.

You can check your child's immunization compliance status now in the IC Parent Portal under Health.

If you have questions you should discuss your child’s vaccination needs with your health care provider or local public health agency.

VISION AND HEARING SCREENING

In accordance with state guidelines, students are screened at selected grade levels and by teacher referral for vision and hearing. Appropriate referrals are then made to the parent/guardian.

Vision and hearing screenings are conducted in the schools in the fall for the following grades: PreK, K, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9 and all students new to the district.

DENTAL SCREENINGS

Dental care in early childhood is essential to promote familiarity with professional dental services, prevent dental decay and connect children and parents to regular dental resources in their community. Clinica Family Health and Boulder Valley School District have partnered to provide low to no cost school-based dental screenings, sealants, fluoride treatments, education, and case management services to prevent and treat dental cavities. The program is currently in a pilot phase and is not in every elementary school yet. We are planning for expansion in the coming years.

PHYSICALS

BVSD recommends that all students follow the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines to maintain optimal health, including physicals and screenings; and that all those new to the area receive a physical examination and establish care with a local healthcare provider.

Required Exams:

A physical exam is required for enrollment in a preschool program.
A physical is also required every 365 days for students participating in athletics.

Boulder County Assistance Programs & Resources

Boulder County Healthy Kids Initiative

Helps students and their families enroll in health insurance and to access affordable health care in the community. Healthy Kids staff are available to share their knowledge of available resources, as well as help families enroll in Medicaid, Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) and other assistance programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Medicaid and CHP+ are free and low-cost public health insurance plans that provide medical, dental and vision benefits. There are no monthly premiums and co-pays range from $0-15 depending on family income. CHP+ has higher income eligibility limits than many public assistance programs, so many working families can qualify. Healthy Kids can also connect families to Connect for Health Colorado, a new health insurance marketplace where people can shop for health insurance and access tax credits to reduce monthly health insurance premiums. SNAP provides food assistance benefits to help qualifying households purchase food. The average monthly allotment for a household of four is $250/month. Boulder County Child Care Assistance Program

Do you need help paying for childcare for children ages 0-12? Visit the Boulder County Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) website at Boulder County CCAP to see if you may be eligible.
