In this course students will build a sound foundation in French through structured practice in listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities. The course emphasizes daily participation and regular demonstration of both oral and written proficiency. In addition to expanding on core material presented in French 1, students will master appropriate verbs, grammar structures, idioms, vocabulary, and cultural information necessary to carry out the general communicative functions. This class is taught primarily in French. This course is advanced, and goes beyond curriculum expectations of a standard course offering by increasing depth and complexity. Students will be engaged in dynamic, highlevel learning.The pace of this course may be faster than that of a traditional course.

This is a course taught primarily in French, and will round out the basic knowledge presented in Levels 1 and 2 by giving special attention to advanced conversation and composition. More complex points of grammar will be presented with their application in daily communication. Further structured practice in the four skills and enhanced cultural awareness will enable students to perform more advanced communicative functions. Themes to be explored are change, groups, and leisure. This course is advanced, and goes beyond curriculum expectations of a standard course by increasing depth and complexity. This course, taught exclusively in French, explores the AP & IB themes by intensive practice in advanced composition and conversation, with an emphasis on refining and integrating advanced grammar into daily communication. Emphasis will be placed on comprehension of authentic texts genres and visual thematic images and the ability to respond appropriately in varying registers both in writing and orally. Students will develop verb usage, grammatical structures vocabulary, idioms and cultural understanding necessary to communicate in a global society at an advanced level.

This course provides advanced instruction in French language and culture, and is the culminating class in the French language curricular pathway. It is a continuation of IB French 4 and prepares students for the AP and IB French B Language exam and assessment goals of mastering the written and spoken language at an intermediate level while showing an understanding of Francophone culture. The course, taught exclusively in French explores advanced topics in composition, grammar, and in-depth analysis of challenging literary works and readings from contemporary sources such as magazines, newspapers and articles. Students will develop listening skills from varied authentic media sources and the ability to discuss and present their comprehension of this media in varied presentations. The curriculum not only fulfills the IB syllabus goals, but also equips students for successful completion of the AP French Language and Culture exam.

BVSD Pre-IB Latin 2 gives students an opportunity to explore
in-depth the language, literature and culture of ancient Rome.
Students will learn how Latin is versatile and finely-structured,
having a major influence on
the development of most modern European languages. Students will
complete grammar exercises and make significant progress in reading
Latin. Readings include stories about famous heroes and heroines
from both myth and history. Students will read a variety of classical
literature to include selections from Julius Caesar’s Commertarii De
Bello Gallico. Cultural emphasis is on the Late Republic/Early
Empire. Key methodological tools of the course include expanded
study of vocabulary and extensive reading. This course is advanced,
and goes beyond curriculum expectations of a standard course by
increasing depth and complexity. Students will be engaged in
dynamic, high-level learning. The pace of this course may be faster

This is a capstone course to the BVSD Pre-IB/IB curriculum pathway.
It is firmly rooted in advanced literature and prepares students to be
successful on the IB Latin exam and associated assessments. Students
will be immersed in poetry, learn more about style, meter, and literary
devices, and perform Latin oral readings. The curriculum includes
readings from Roman authors selected for the IB exams. The
curriculum not only answers the particularities of IB goals, but may
also equip students for successful completion of the AP Latin exam.
Summer reading may be required.

Students will gain vocabulary on global topics along with the standard Spanish 2 vocabulary through topical readings and varied media sources to increase understanding and communication in Spanish. This course is advanced, and goes beyond curriculum expectations of a standard course by increasing depth and complexity. Students will be engaged in dynamic, high-level learning. The pace of this course may be faster than that of a traditional course.

World Language Elective
F89 Semester Abroad at School
language studies in college or in other venues. World Language
courses are based on four standards: Communication, Culture,
Connections, and Comparisons. Semester Abroad at School is taught
at a BVSD school. This course introduces students to a variety of
languages and countries, broadens worldviews, deepens appreciation
of other cultures, and inspires students to pursue additional language
studies in college. For the Novice-Mid Range Level, students learn to
communicate, comprehend, and present, in oral and written form, on
a variety of very familiar and predictable topics using isolated words,
learned phrases, and learned grammatical structures in the context of Culture,Connections and Comparisons.
